Krav Maga - Self Defence

Krav Maga is simply Hebrew for Contact Combat.

It is a self-defence system developed for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) that consists of a wide combination of techniques sourced from a number of martial arts, along with realistic fight training. Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and its extremely efficient and brutal counter-attacks that are used to end a dangerous situation as quickly as possible. 

It was derived from street-fighting skills developed by Hungarian-Israeli martial artist Imi Lichtenfield, who made use of his training as a boxer and wrestler as a means of defending the Jewish quarter against fascist groups in Bratislava in the mid-to-late 1930s. 

By the late 1940s he had migrated to Israel and begun providing lessons on combat training to what was to become the IDF, and the system that became known as Krav Maga.  It has since been refined for civilian, police and military applications.

Krav Maga utilises a minimal number of techniques to prevent delays and hesitation in trying to select the appropriate technique for any situation.  Instead it looks at the shape of the attack and utilises principles to dictate how that threat is dealt with.  Therefore success is based upon mind-set and attitude, producing the required aggression to fight back and win the fight!!

We aim to stay as close as possible to the training methods used by our instructors in Israel (which is the same way BFS instructors are trained), however as we are in the Home Counties of the UK and our members are not (on the whole) reliant upon these skills on a daily basis we do amend how we teach to be more appropriate for people training a couple of times a week.  We feel it important to be honest about this as true Krav Maga is taught full time, 8 hours every day several weeks and is then followed by regular training and courses.  This cannot be replicated in the time spent in a club environment, despite what some groups will claim
