Applied Shotokan Karate

Futher developed in Japan by Gichin Funakoshi from Okinawan Karate (the ancient Okinawan art of Te mixed with other fighting styles brought to the Ryuku Islands from other countries such as China), Karate is the original "Mixed Martial Art". You can expect to study body movement and understanding through a range of techniques. With training and experience your understanding of techniques will improve and those that you believe to just be a strike or block when you begin will open up to be used in a variety of applications such as locks, holds and throws etc. (techniques that those without the understanding of Karate believe to only be available via training in MMA or Jiu Jitsu).
We focus upon fluid powerful techniques performed with accuracy, with the vital part of our training centering around the application of these techniques for use in real life situations. It is true that many karate techniques as performed in class will not instantly work in self defence situations, this is where we take things to the next stage and ensure that all members understand the psychology of the situation and can adapt techniques in order to neutralise any situation. The techniques we use are the same as many syllabi, the way we use them is more advanced.
